Youth

Muskogee Housing Authority in collaboration with OSU Extension Services, Muskogee Public Library, Muskogee Public Schools, Muskogee Police Department, and other community resources to provide successful and innovative programs focusing on education, health and wellness, and academic success.

Literacy Program:

Muskogee Housing Authority, Muskogee Public Library, volunteers, and other educational partners work together to create an environment that encourages Literacy and Learning by providing access to age appropriate books and other literacy tools to children and families living in HUD assisted housing. Our goal is to help improve literacy outcomes and ensure all youth receive the tools needed to reach their full potential.

After School Homework Program:

Youth ages K-12 are invited to attend the After School Homework Helpers Program at each of the housing sites to receive support with homework and school projects. Support is provided by Muskogee Housing Authority Coordinators and staff and volunteers. Older students are also encouraged to assist the younger students when needed. Each of the students participating in this after school event also have access to the computer lab. Staff provides an after school snack for all of the kids attending.

Literacy in the Park:

Kids get to explore a variety of literature, enhance reading and writing skills, create art, and participate in digging in the dirt, planting flowers, vegetables, creating a growth chart, and caring for their plants. Time is divided between outdoor and being in the learning center.

Christmas Literacy Bag Event:

Every year, children living at Port City Acres and Green Country Village receive a Literacy Bag from Santa and Muskogee Housing Authority Staff. The bags are filled with age appropriate books, activities that promote literacy and family interaction.

Summer Reading Programs:

Muskogee Housing Authority & the Muskogee Public Library encourage youth of all ages to participate in the Summer Reading Challenges.

Summer Lunch Program:

Healthy meals are provided to all children ages 0-18 which is sponsored by the Hope Outreach Program, beginning the first week of June until the first week in August.

Health & Wellness Programs:

Muskogee Housing Authority, OSU Extension and Muskogee Public Library provide ongoing activities to encourage youth to engage in eating healthy, learn how to prepare healthy snacks/meals, follow recipes, exercise, and learn about the health risks related to obesity.

Pop with a Cop:

A program created by local law enforcement to build trusting relationships with the youth of our community. Each week, two officers visit our public housing sites to interact with our youth. They talk about sports, school, friends, ideas, etc. Sometimes they have a quick game of basketball, football or even play board games. The kids really look forward to this.
